For more than 20 years NCTC has sponsored North Carolina's High School and Middle School Play Festivals. High Schools qualify for the State Festival by attending one of eight regional festivals around the state, over two weekends: October 26-27 and November 2-3. Schools advancing to the state festival are chosen at these regionals, and the State High School Play Festival takes place on Thursday, Nov. 15 and Friday, Nov. 16 as part of the NCTC Fall Theatre Gathering.

About the Festival

The North Carolina Theatre Conference has been the sole sponsoring organization for the NCTC High School Play Festival since 2001. High School students from across the state participate by presenting a one-act play or a cutting from a full-length play with full sets, lighting, sound and costumes in a 45-minute time limit. Plays in the Festival are first presented at eight regional sites across North Carolina. The two plays from each site that are judged to be the best of their regional site go on to participate in the State Festival.

Over 2,000 students participate annually in the High School Festival from as many as 100 different schools from all parts of the state.

Statement of Purpose

The primary goals of the festivals are to foster collaboration, cooperation, and communication among theatre arts programs and to provide a supportive, nurturing atmosphere in which young artists are free to explore the multifaceted world of theatre. This event aims to stimulate interest in theatre arts in schools and communities across North Carolina. It functions both as a showcase and as a means of assessing and improving the standards of middle and secondary school theatre arts programs in the state. Process is as highly valued as the product. The festivals are used as a catalyst for motivating students to do their best work.
