Organizational Structure and Governance
The "New" Structure
As discussed in our history section, NCTC lived most of its life with a divisional structure: board members representing specific interest group constituencies. The staff was an administrative support person that assisted the work of the various divisional chairs and committees. The 1997-1998 restructuring, dubbed the "New Realities" initiative, brought significant changes to this structure. This restructuring has solved some key institutional problems while creating new challenges itself. Most members remain supportive of the restructuring, however, finding that it has begun to accomplish its stated purpose: to encourage collaboration across the old divisional lines and a sense of community shared by everyone doing theatre in North Carolina, at any level and in myriad ways. Moreover, the centralized leadership has enabled the organization to speak with one voice on public policy issues that have confronted the field repeatedly in the past few years.
