NC Shakespeare Festival - A Thousand Cranes

The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival (NCSF) will hold Non-Equity auditions for its 2008 Family Theatre production of A Thousand Cranes directed by Allan Edwards.

The production is an inspiring, NEA award winning One Act that tells in music, dance, and ritual the story of a twelve-year-old Japanese survivor of World War II. Given the nature of the story, The Festival is enthusiastic about developing a multi-racial company for the production. The Festival will cast 2 females and 1 male in the production.

NCSF is interested in seeing actors 15 years old and up for the following roles: SADAKO: A twelve year old Japanese girl living in Hiroshima, Japan ten years after the end of World War II. She is optimistic, competitive, and energetic with a contagious joy in living. ACTOR ONE: Male who plays Sadako’s 14 year old friend KENJI, her FATHER, and other MALE CHARACTERS. ACTOR TWO: Female who plays Sadako’s MOTHER, the spirit of her GRANDMOTHER, and other FEMALE CHARACTERS. Auditionees will be expected to demonstrate graceful movement, some musical sensibility, and an ability to improvise. Actors will be cast without regard to race. Although SADAKO is young, ACTOR ONE and ACTOR TWO can be cast without regard to age. All interested actors at least 15 years old are strongly encouraged to audition. The director would like to hear a brief prepared speech telling a story of survival. Actors will also be put through some improvisation exercises and be asked to sing briefly. NCSF requires an 8x10 B&W headshot and detailed resume at audition time. Actor contracts will run four weeks, from Monday, July 7 to Sunday, August 3. Actors will receive a stipend of $800 to $1,200, depending on casting and experience. Actors residing outside the Triad will receive housing and, if necessary, transportation.
